In this novel, Colby Mills takes a break from running the family farm to play a few gigs in St. Pete’s Beach, Florida. While relaxing during his working vacation, he meets Morgan Lee, and the two have a nearly instant connection. Meanwhile, in a seemingly disconnected storyline, Beverly, with her young son in tow, goes to great lengths to flee an abusive husband. About 80% through the book, the two stories collide stunningly and unexpectedly.
It’s been a while since I’ve read a Nicholas Sparks book, but I remember them as easy reads with mostly likable characters, sweet love stories, and events that pull on your heartstrings. Dreamland had each of these elements. I finished it in a day; it evoked a range of emotions, and I found Colby to be a compelling character. I connected with his dedication to his family and his resolve to do what was needed while searching for a way to follow his passions. I also enjoyed how Colby and Morgan brought out the best in each other creatively as songwriters.
Dreamland revisits themes from some of his previous novels, such as fleeing an abuser and love at first sight, which gives this novel a familiar feel. However, the characters face unique dilemmas, and Sparks builds more suspense in this book by making us wait so long before revealing how the stories connect. Both of these elements helped make Dreamland stand apart from some of his other books.
One of the lines in this book that caught my attention was: “…we don’t always get to choose our path, sometimes it chooses us.” What do you think? Do we get to choose our direction, or are we destined to follow a certain path?
