Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins

★★★★☆

I knew I was in for a treat with Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins when the clerk at the bookstore commented on what a fun read it would be. I was purchasing a stack of six books and she singled this one out as the one I would want to read right away.

Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins

My first read by Rachel Hawkins, this book was a deliciously intoxicating closed-room thriller. The story begins with Lux losing her job at the Haleakala Resort in Maui. Jobless, aimless, and in search of cash and adventure, she and her boyfriend Nico accept a job sailing two beautiful women, Amma and Brittany, to the mysterious, remote island of Meroe.

After they arrive, they are surprised to meet three strangers on the mysterious, dangerous island. Instead of a once-in-a-lifetime vacation experience, they encounter death and deceit.

None of the characters were particularly likable, which usually bothers me in a read. I typically don’t enjoy reading about people with few redeemable qualities. However, it worked in this case. I found the writing engaging, and the plot provided the perfect indoor escape for a rainy weekend. Some elements required me to suspend belief, but those flaws were outweighed by the fact that the story kept me guessing.

I am already on the search for my next Rachel Hawkins read!
